Amphetamines are central nervous system stimulants. Use of the drug in doses of 10-100 mg induces a sense of euphoria followed by paranoia, nervousness, and sometimes frank psychosis. Amphetamines increase the heart rate and blood pressure and suppress the appetite. Heavy abuse may result in permanent damage to certain essential nerve structures in the brain. When amphetamine is ingested, it is either rapidly deactivated in the liver or excreted unchanged into the urine.
