Cardiac Troponin-I (cTnI) is a cardiac muscle protein, together with troponin T (TnT) and troponin C (TnC) forms complex in heart to play a fundamental role in the transmission of intracellular calcium signal for actin-myosin interaction. The human cTnI has an additional amino acid residue on its N-terminal that does not exist on the skeletal forms.
Following an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), cTnI is rapidly released into the bloodstream within 4 to 6 hours, remaining elevated for up to 6 to 10 days before returning to normal. In healthy individuals and those with skeletal muscle injuries, cTnI concentrations are typically very low, making cTnI a specific marker for diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
